Heart FELT Curriculum: Available for purchase. Go to the "more" tab and then "Resources" to purchase. $125 and give what you can options History: HeartFELT, Foundational Experience Learning Track, was created in 2018 to fill a gap between Nonviolent Communication introductory (NVC) programs and integration and/or certification programs, which there were only a few. Myself and Genevieve Keller began on this journey creating a curriculum for an online pilot program. It is now available in digital form! It includes: Thirty nine 2 hour sessions for the integration of NVC skills and practices with a body centered emphasis. This can be used for self-study, partner study, and/or in a group or community. We have attempted to integrate aspects regarding power, rank and status/privilege and the impact of domination systems by adding possible obstacles to each skill of the matrix. You will receive access to a google folder that includes all need materials, 39 sessions with complete lesson plans (see below for format).
History: It was created to support those wanting to more deeply integrate the concepts and principles in a felt sense whether they wanted to become a certified trainer in NVC or not. The hope was to have body based practices to support living and knowing NVC consciousness and form which would be a transformation from the domination, power-over, colonizing culture we had been socialized into towards and into a Needs based, power-with, compassionate consciousness.
It began as a prototype in 2018-2019 with an experiment to bring body based learning online with a group from all over the world, although mostly US based. It was also created to support learning communities. Heart FELT also continued in a second year of prototyping with some returning members and some new members in 2019-2020. The curriculum was originally created by Marcia Christen and Genevieve Keller. It was added on to and revised by Marcia Christen, Kenneth Enright, Anita Anandan and Joel Wesby, along with feedback from the participants. Then I, Marcia Christen, continued to edit and bring in the obstacles to each piece of the matrix with permission from a group working to add a lens of power and privilege to the matrix by Reena Ginwala, Anita Anandan, Miki Kashtan, and others. Purpose: The dream was to be able to create a curriculum for a learning community of co-explorers to be able to practice together and integrate a felt sense of the consciousness and form of Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg. The main form uses the Pathways to Liberation Matrix by Jacob Gotwals, John Lehman, Jim Manske, and Jori Manske; the Core Commitments by Miki Kashtan; and the Key Differentiations that are part of the Center for Nonviolent Communication’s Certification Preparation Packet. The intention is to support NVC practitioners and enthusiasts, along with anyone wanting to go on to taking the role of Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication. We want this to be something people can easily use and facilitate themselves where they gather to do on their own without having to travel to an integration group. The hope was for it to work online, or in person in groups and communities without needing a trainer to facilitate.
We acknowledge that the matrix itself is a structure from the domination culture and may be then more challenging to step out of the sense of right/wrong (the new wrong is the domination culture listed as the ‘unskilled unconscious’ label and new right being the ‘Integrated unconscious competence’ column). AND we hope that if this is used as a self-assessment tool we can openly see the challenge before us. By returning to the body again and again during the sessions, to practice, we hope to support our unlearning of the domination culture conditioning and the return to the inner wisdom we all carry - that we are divine and that our fates are intertwined. It may help us remember step by step as we travel through the matrix, that there is a flow of life, of giving and receiving, of recognizing our shared humanity, and a way we can hold the ‘me’ and the ‘we’ in ways that support all in surviving and thriving. The hope is that it will be a spring board for practice and exploration and can be modified to fit the group, culture, setting and community. This can be a support for the book Pathways to Nonviolent Communication, by Jim Manske, although the book isn’t a requirement.
It is also a hope that those who use the Heart FELT curriculum and modify it will give feedback so that this can continue to grow. We have attempted to integrate aspects regarding power, rank and status/privilege and the impact of domination systems and I imagine it can use more eyes on it to more fully highlight and be aware of how to transform from domination culture so that we can transform our internal, interpersonal, and systemic culture to create a world that supports thriving for all.
It can be used as a decolonization program, if that works for you - it is a way to reclaim our collective, interdependent, compassionate consciousness that is a part of us, and our survival. This is the exploration we invite you into. Format:
Meditation/grounding and/or a remembering - setting the intention and practicing the consciousness as we begin each session
Connection time (also part of the practice).
Group check in (as part of the practice of connection, trust building and community building).
Exploration of a piece on the Pathways to Liberation Matrix (“the matrix”) along with Core Commitments and/or Key Distinctions
Practice in pairs or small groups
Harvest of the practice
Practice invitation for the week
Closing with a check out

Communication for Connection and Understanding 6 Week series Date: TBD (upon demand) Whether its larger issues in our country or communication in our families and communities, we need communication skills to be able to reach each other when we have differences, that reach across the divide, and we need ways to stay connected and find solutions that work for all. Not an easy task. That's why we need to explore ways to speak and listen in ways that lead to more connection, understanding and effectiveness. After all, what we say may change the world! We will start with the base we all need - self-compassion so that we may speak and listen from grounded, present places, and so that we may offer compassion and our truth with care and responsibility.
We will review the basics of NVC its form and essence (consiousness). We'll add in processes to transform "enemy images" we have, add in more gratitude practices, and look at beneficial regret practices along with practicing the basics of empathy and expression based on NVC. Nonviolent Communication as a Spiritual Practice Part I
We all know we want to live our values of compassion, yet HOW to do that is often a mystery, even with a strong spiritual tradition or practice to guide us. Come learn about how Nonviolent Communication can support any spiritual practice and help us to live in alignment with our spiritual values. We will do interactive exercises, solo, pair and group work in a nurturing environment to explore self-compassion as our base for compassion and authentic expression. Nonviolent Communication is based on empathy and truth telling - honest expression that also holds care for all, "truth in love". Learn how compassion does not have to mean agreement or submitting. Learn how to add to how you can respond more with mindfulness and react less.
Dr. Marshall Rosenberg identified a specific approach to communicating — called Nonviolent Communication (NVC) — that leads us to give from the heart, connecting us in a way that allows our natural compassion to flourish without giving up the values that we cherish. He spent many years sharing this in some of the most war-torn areas of the world.
While studying the factors that affect our ability to communicate and stay compassionate, Marshall Rosenberg was struck by the crucial role that language can play. While we may not consider the way we talk to be “violent,” words often lead to hurt and pain toward ourselves or to others. That’s because so many of us have been trained to speak in terms of moralistic judgments, evaluations and labels that disconnect us from compassion.
At this one day training we will use various exercises to practice the fundamentals of Nonviolent Communication and apply the language and consciousness to understanding ourselves, listening, and speaking. We will cover:
Processes for transforming your judgments into what is important to you.
Practices for self-awareness and connection that will bring clarity and understanding.
A deeper understanding of empathy and honest communication that can be serving for everyone.
A process for transforming judgments from others into understanding and connection.
A community of co-explorers.
processes that reclaim choice and empowerment for all
COMMUNICATION FOR CLARITY AND CONNECTION continuation (or Communicating across the Divide).
This class will be a review of the introduction to Nonviolent Communication (Communication for Clarity and Connection). This class is for those who have read Marshall Rosenberg's book or taken another Nonviolent Communication class since we will be reviewing, practicing, and building on practices to continue to integrate this consciousness and skills. It could also be for those who have not had a class before as long as you know it will not be as slow of a pace as a beginning class.
Whether its larger issues in our country or communication in our families and communities, we need communication skills to be able to reach each other when we have differences, that reach across the divide, and we need ways to stay connected and find solutions that work for all. Not an easy task. That's why we need to explore ways to speak and listen in ways that lead to more connection, understanding and effectiveness. After all, what we say may change the world!
